Stand up against racism!

Dear Friends,

Right now, Fox News is trying to paint Barack Obama as foreign, un-American, suspicious, and scary. They're trying to send Americans the message that our country's first viable Black candidate for President is not "one of us."

I've joined on to ColorOfChange.org's campaign to push back on Fox, publicly demanding they stop their race-baiting and fear mongering. If that doesn't work, then we'll go to their advertisers and the FCC. I wanted to invite you to sign on as well. It takes only a moment:

Here's what happened recently:

After Senator Obama won the nomination, he and his wife gave each other a "pound" in front of the cameras. Fox anchor E.D. Hill called the act of celebration a "terrorist fist jab." Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"--slang used to describe the unmarried mother of a man's child. It was a clear attempt to associate the Obamas with negative cultural stereotypes about Black people, an insult not only to Michelle Obama but to women and Black people everywhere.

After each of the incidents mentioned, Fox issued some form of weak apology. But what does it mean when you slap someone in the face, apologize the next day, then slap them again on the third? It means the apology is meaningless.

These aren't one-time incidents--they're part of a pattern that continues no matter how often Fox is forced to apologize. Fox has a clear record of attacking and undermining Black institutions, Black leaders, and Black people in general.

If we don't push back now, we will see more of the same from now until November. Please join me in helping to bring an end to Fox's behavior.

Aula de jornalismo (daquele que se deveria evitar)

Gilson Caroni Filho oferece uma boa dica no Boletim Carta Maior pra uma aula de tudo o quanto eu acredito Jornalismo não deve ser… confiram! E como se isso não fosse triste o suficiente, ele lembra que gente como Roberto Pompeu de Toledo parece ter desaprendido história. Talvez um bom salário tenha o poder de mudar não apenas os princípios morais de uma pessoa, mas também sua percepção da história. Prefiro omitir neste "post" o nome da revista pra onde ele trabalha, pra manter o nível do blog…

Bibliotecas fechando em São Paulo

Falando de livros e de bibliotecas, li hoje na Folha que quatro delas serão fechadas por falta de público, na cidade de São Paulo. Os prédios serão usados de maneira diferente. Infelizmente, a administração não parece interessada em investir no estímulo à leitura. Ora, não que ler, problema seu... Na matéria disponível na Folha on line há nomes e locais das bibliotecas condenadas ao fechamento. Pelo jeito, não basta ter acervo é preciso ter vontade política. Isso lhe parece familiar?

A propósito de livros…

Eu não tive acesso a livros muito cedo. Por boa parte da minha juventude, tive que sair em busca do que estava disponível em bibliotecas públicas, empréstimos com amigos e, do jeito que era possível, saciava uma fome de leitura que, dizem, só nasce se despertada bem cedo. Felizmente, a minha, que eu prefiro chamar de amor, veio de qualquer maneira. E se tornou essência da minha existência e personalidade. Mas sei que nem sempre é assim. Sei que um bom estímulo pode fazer milagres nesse sentido.
Por isso, tenho o projeto ambicioso de conseguir promover e capacitar bibliotecas nos espaços públicos disponíveis no Brasil. É triste que pouco se faça nessa área. Meu sonho é poder ver um pequeno mas variado acervo em espaços como postos médicos, associações de bairro, agremiações esportivas e, quem sabe, até, em bibliotecas. A idéia é mobilizar gente interessada em transformar este sonho num projeto. É coisa a longo prazo, bem sei, mas quem tiver idéias e formas de ajudar, por favor entre em contato. Aqui se lança apenas a semente.
